Here's some popular tourist attractions and places to visit in Rhodes :-
Rhodes Old Town
This Medieval City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rhodes Old Town is one of the largest and oldest inhabited medieval towns in Europe. It was fortified and made larger by the Knights of the Order of St John in the 14th and 15th centuries AD. The Old Town is a very impressive and beautiful area. Walking through its streets is like stepping back in time several hundred years.
Spend time exploring the town following the cobble-paved alleys, through gateways and colonnades, into squares and obscure courtyards, past very high, thick fortified walls and lots of Byzantine churches.
The town is also bustling with commercial activity, with plenty of tourist shops, restaurants, cafés, bars and clubs all packed within the medieval walls.
Rhodes Acropolis
The hill overlooking Rhodes Old and New Town is the site of the ancient Hellenistic town of Rhodos and the Acropolis of Rhodos. On the acropolis you'll find the remains of the Temples of Zeus and Athena and the partly-restored Temple of Apollo. Below is the restored stadium, which is still used for performances. Great Photographic opportunities here to capture a spectacular sunset.
Mandraki Harbour
Mandraki Harbour has been in continual use since 408 BC, now mainly used as a marina for pleasure craft and excursion boats. Mandraki Harbour has three disused windmills, built by the Knights of St John, also the famous stone columns topped by figures of a stag and hind, Rhodes Town's heraldic animals.
Monastery of Filerimos
The monastery of Panaghia of Filerimos is in Ialysos, on Filerimos Hill. Filerimos Monastery is dedicated to Zoodochou Pigi (Our Lady, The Source of Life). The gothic style monastery and stone church (built by knights in the 15th century on the site of an old Byzantine church), has been restored by Italian archaeologists.
Nearby is 14th century underground Byzantine church dedicated to Aghios Georgios, (St George).
The Acropolis of Lindos
The ancient Acropolis of Lindos is situated in Lindos. Ancient Lindos was the most important town on the island and had been inhabited ever since the 3rd millennium BC. In the 6th century BC, the town thrived on trade and sailing. The Acropolis is built on a steep rock (116m high). The view from Lindos Acropolis and the nearby Medieval Castle is spectacular.
The Ancient City of Kamiros
Ancient Kamiros, situated 30 km west of the island's capital, was one of the three ancient cities of the island. In the Archaic and Hellenistic period it was a very important centre, and it was rediscovered during the excavations held in the area in the 19th century. Ruins of houses and other buildings are visible. Another find of the geometrical period (8th C.), is a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena on the acropolis.
An earthquake destroyed the classical town in 226 BC and probably the classical temple of Athena Kameirias, and another earthquake destroyed the city a second time in 142 BC.
